Crocusses

Nothing cries out Spring is here like the white and purple crocusses as they pop up around people's yards. Those pretty little flowers act as a flag for most of us to let us know that winter has left and Spring is on her way. It's also typically what I use as my gauge to know it's safe to bring my starter seeds outside.

This year I've started with marigolds. From what I've read they do not require as much sunshine as many other flowering plants, and so far have begun budding with fervor. I'm keeping it simple this year. By respecting the challenges I met with last year, I hope this years plantings will be more successful. Sadly this means accepting the fact that I will not be able to enjoy home grown tomato's but, healthy plants are a far more reasonable goal.

To compensate for the lack of sunshine on my balcony I'm planning some gorilla style planting in the apartment complex I live in. They just tore up an old tennis court, and there is a beautiful plot of land that gets oodles of sunshine begging to have some sunflower seeds planted. I have no idea what the reaction to such a clandestine planting would be, but I know they can't build anything there at this time because it's wetlands and it's protected. I can justify my behavior because the erosion that is occurring in that space at the moment is very bad for the land.

As always I'll keep updating on what is sprouting, and post pics as I have them.
