Since I mentioned it in an earlier post I thought I'd share the steps to a simple clearing ceremony. I searched all over the internet for a reasonable guide on how to do one on your own, and simply couldn't find it. Inevitably I had to call a friend who is a feng shui master, and he explained the basic steps.
What you'll need:
Blanket
A few bowls (preferably one for every room you plan to clear)
Tea lights (holders for each tea light if you wish to be wary of fire. I know I do.)
Flowers - Scissors to remove the stems
Rock Salt
Water (preferably in some form of container. This may simply mean tap water in another bottle.)
A smudge stick (this may be sage, white sage, lavender)
Optional:bellsba gua
To begin the ceremony take your blanket and spread it in the middle of the main living area. This will demarcate the space which you will set up on. Place all your various ceremonial objects on the blanket.
Take your tea lights and place them all about the house/apartment. You want to light particularly dark areas, and be sure that from every line of sight you are able to see a tea light. For example if you're standing in a room you want to be able to see a tea light in the next room through the door way. This is why it's good to have a safe container to place the candles in.
Go back to the blanket. State your intention. We are clearing this space of it's past, and making way for our future. You may say anything you like if you choose a prayer that you wish to say now is a good time to say it. This is personal, so make it personal."Bless" the water, which only means send your good energy and intentions at it. Now fill the bowls with water, cut the stems from the flowers and float them in the dishes of water. Place the dishes on the floor in front of the windows and on the counters in the kitchen and bathroom(s).
Now you are ready to get rid of the old. To break up the energy clap all through out the space along the walls, in the corners, if a spot feels stuck clap until it feels unstuck. Trust yourself you know what you're doing. At this time you may want to break out the bells to help you clear out that old energy.
When you're done clapping and chiming. WASH YOUR HANDS. You don't want any of that old qi sticking to you.
Take the salt and sprinkle it on the sills of the windows and doors. This absorbs anything that remains, you may wash your hands again after you do that if you feel compelled to, though it is not necessary.
Now for the good stuff. Light the smudge stick, so it's smoldering not on fire, and walk through out the space wafting the smoke towards the walls corners and center. Be careful there are probably candles on the floor. If you're doing the ceremony with someone who has never done one before, let them have a turn with the smudge stick. I've noticed this is usually where people feel like they really want to get involved. Also be sure you have something to ash into, you don't want to burn a hole in your landlord's brand new carpet now do you?
Finally cast shields over your walls, stand with your back to a public wall (this may be an outdoor wall or one you share with a neighbor)Start with your hands above you and move them downwards to the flower sending your energy out through your finger tips as you do so. Seal your space from outside influences, and if you wish place a ba gua, with the mirror facing out from the windows, and doors.
